PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA: REALITY CHECKS

Toe and her husband, D, are diplomats who, at the time we visited Cambodia, were assigned in Phnom Penh. You can read more about Toe, her Cambodian experience, her kuro-kuro at iba pa by clicking on this

When Toe found out we were going to Cambodia, she and D graciously extended us an invitation to stay at their place.  I wanted to get Toe and D something special. As I was not quite sure of what they needed, I e-mailed Toe to get a sense of what she wanted. Of course, Toe asked for the impossible. She wanted Kentucky Fried Chicken!  Since Siem Reap was our first stop, I could not conceive of a way of keeping fried chicken edible until we get to Phnom Penh. It therefore came as a relief when Toe later told me to bring Purefoods Corned Beef instead. Apparently, this is D’s favorite. So I arrived in Phnom Penh with my overnight bag stuffed with several cans of Purefoods Corned Beef and my special surprise for Toe and D – Poppycock and chocolate covered potato chips.

I was touched that, instead of just sending their driver, Toe and D took time out of their busy schedules to pick me up at the airport.  I arrived in Phnom Penh a few hours ahead of Padma as we were unable to get on the same flight. Being the organized girls we are, Toe and I planned Padma’s and my itinerary for our two-day stay in Phnom Penh. This is the itinerary we came up with:

DAY 1: (a) Shop at the Russian Market for semi-precious gems; (b) pick up Padma at the airport; (c) have lunch at Toe’s place; (d) visit the Royal Palace and National Museum; and (e) have dinner out.

DAY 2: (a) Shop at the Russian Market with Padma; (b) have lunch out with Toe and D; (c) visit the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum; and (d) head for the airport.

Notice that, based on this schedule, I would get to go to the Russian market twice.  I do think this is a great itinerary for people who are staying in Phnom Penh for only two days.

i look forward to reading your thoughts on the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum - I was able to go to the Holocaust Museum in L.A. and it was such a powerful but sad experience.

I have not been to the Holocaust Museum in LA but I am sure the genocide and torture did not happen there. If that place evoked strong emotions in you, perhaps a Toul Sleng Genocide Museum experience will evoke an even more intense reaction from you. This is because the Toul Sleng Museum is actually the prison where the torture and killing of Cambodians took place. I will post a very long article about Toul Sleng on Sunday. If you are brave enough, you may want to read about how I felt when I was there.

Not everyone loves chocolate covered potato chips but I do. I’m glad you and D like it too. Don’t you think that the crisp salty potato chips make the chocolate more exciting to eat? If you are craving for it, Royce, the chocolate store in Rockwell, sells chocolate covered potato chips.

Read my post today. It is all about the gems.
