PANDORA’S ALTERNATIVE VALENTINE SPECIAL
February
2009

Have I told you that I am an Asian soap junkie? I am. I am.
As I make this confession, the critics (a.k.a., my family) are probably disowning me as I blog. The critics enjoy reading high-brow books, watching critically acclaimed films and going to museums and art exhibits. Thus, they cannot understand my fascination with Asian soaps. They are fun to watch guys! It gives you a different perspective on reality or non-reality.
I started watching Asian soaps in 2000 when some friends introduced me to popular Japanese and Korean drama series. I was not then selective about the dramas I would watch. I would spend two to three days huddled in my bed watching a twenty to thirty hour long drama that would revolve around a series of unfortunate events like in Beautiful Days or end in a tragedy, i.e., the leading lady goes blind, like in Winter Sonata. After, my eyes would be puffy from crying and I would be left with a desire for a better ending. This is not to say that Beautiful Days and Winter Sonata were lousy soaps. They were great soaps but were just too tragic for me. I have now learned my lesson. Nowadays, I only watch romantic comedy series that have feel good endings. Yup, I try to find out the ending first before even watching the series. (I do this with books as well.) Clearly, I failed the marshmallow test.
For the month of February, i.e, the month of luuuuv, I will be posting, in addition to my favorite poems, summaries of some of my favorite Japanese and Korean romantic comedy series for those who have a hankering for the absurd, funny, bizarre and just plain pulse raising stories.
Happy Valentine’s…
